Marjorie’s Message
Scrolling to Strolling Through Pages
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Happy New Year! As January rolls in, I’ve embarked on what some might call a ‘digital diet’. That’s right, I waved goodbye to endless scrolling on my personal Instagram account. No more scrolling past pictures of extravagant brunches or funny cat videos. It’s official – I now only allow myself 15 minutes a day. That’s right! And guess what? Some days I do not even open the app anymore.
Why this sudden change, you ask?
Well, it hit me one day as I was aimlessly thumbing through my feed: I was missing out on life’s actual pixel-free pleasures. So, I decided to swap my smartphone’s glow for the soft rustle of book pages. I’ve always been an avid reader but kept finding myself “without time” to read all the books that have been piling up all over the house. Then one day I looked through my daily screen time usage and found where all the “time I didn’t have” had gone.
On my quest to limit my use of social media, I discovered that you can actually set limits on your usage and once that daily limit is reached, the app warns you and closes for the day. No more mindless scrolling! On to catching up on all the books waiting for this Knowledge-Hungry Queen to devour them! From now on, I will be mentioning the books I am reading on this Newsletter and invite all of you to send me recommendations of books that have impacted your life or that you think I would enjoy reading just for the hell of it!
Rebecca Zung’s “Negotiate Like YOU M.A.T.T.E.R
So the first pick for my list, Rebecca Zung’s “Negotiate Like YOU M.A.T.T.E.R.: The Sure Fire Method to Step Up and Win.” Zung, a former family law attorney and negotiation whiz, has turned the somewhat intimidating world of negotiation into a page-turner. The way she breaks down communication into an art form is captivating. She mentions Brene Brown, Carl Jung, Dr. Joe Dispenza, among others in her book. Authors whose work I admire and whose teachings I carry with me through life. As the adage goes “great minds think alike.” Her M.A.T.T.E.R. method isn’t just for the courtroom; it’s like a Swiss Army knife for everyday life!
Whether I’m discussing legal strategies or trying to agree on a movie with friends, Zung’s insights are like discovering a secret language that’s been there all along, which travels parallel to the work I do in therapy. For those of you who know me, know how passionate I am about psychology and understanding the human psyche.
Why not join me in this screen-free escapade?
This whole ‘unplugging’ business has been an eye-opener. Imagine, instead of knowing what everyone had for lunch, I’m now diving into strategies that empower my work and personal life. And let me tell you, the joy of finishing a chapter beats any mindless scrolling any day.
So, here’s a thought: Why not join me in this screen-free escapade? Let’s swap some of our scroll time for real-world joys. Whether it’s getting lost in a book, rediscovering an old hobby, or just enjoying a conversation without the buzz of a phone – there’s a lot to explore.
Less screen time and more ‘me’ time
As we step into this year, I hope we all find happiness in the simple, unfiltered pleasures of life. Here’s to less screen time and more ‘me’ time, to new discoveries, and to finding joy in the little things – like the smell of a new book or the peace of an uncluttered mind.
Here’s to a year of living a lot more in the real world and a lot less in the digital one. Cheers to new adventures, laughter, knowledge and rediscovering the joy in the simplicity and magic of life!
Warmly,
Marjorie Brunelli, Esq.

Your Questions In Focus
Navigating Wills, Trustees, and Probate: Are You Prepared for
Estate Planning Challenges?
Addressing estate planning is an act of foresight and responsibility, one that can be emotionally challenging yet undeniably essential. The certainty of life’s final chapter makes planning not just a legal necessity but a caring gesture for those we leave behind. Here, I share insights into the world of wills, trustees, and probate, aiming to provide clarity and comfort in these often complex matters.
Creating a Will: More Than Just Legal Formality
From my experience, drafting a will is a deeply personal process. It’s not just about dividing assets; it’s about honoring a lifetime of relationships and achievements. I’ve seen the peace of mind it brings to my clients, knowing their legacy is secured in their own words. Clarity and legality in a will are paramount, but so is its reflection of your personal story and values.
Choosing a Trustee: Lessons from the Field
The choice of a trustee is often underestimated in its impact. I’ve advised many clients who initially leaned towards a family member or friend, only to realize the complexities involved. In my practice, I’ve seen how a professional trustee can bring not just expertise, but also impartiality that family dynamics sometimes complicate. It’s about finding that balance between personal trust and professional capability.
Navigating Probate: Demystifying the Process
Probate can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be a herculean task. My role often involves demystifying this process for clients, showing them it’s a structured way to ensure their wishes are fulfilled. Yes, it can be time-consuming, but with the right guidance, it’s a journey that can be navigated with confidence.
The Role of a Trust Administration Attorney:
A Real-World Perspective
In the realm of trusts, the theory and practice can diverge significantly. A trust administration attorney bridges this gap. We provide not just legal advice but also practical solutions to challenges trustees face – from asset management to legal compliance. My goal is always to safeguard the trust’s purpose and protect the trustee from potential pitfalls.
Balancing Costs in Estate Planning: An Honest Look
Discussing costs is crucial. I always aim for transparency with my clients about the financial implications of estate planning. While hiring an attorney is an added expense, it’s often less costly than rectifying mistakes later. It’s about investing in expertise that protects your assets and your wishes.
The Attorney as Trustee? A Personal Take
I often get asked if the drafting attorney should also be the trustee. It’s a valid question with no one-size-fits-all answer. In some cases, it makes perfect sense; in others, it might raise conflict of interest concerns. This decision requires a frank conversation about what’s best for your estate.
